In the sixth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft, and in both wizard and muggle worlds Lord Voldemort and his henchmen are increasingly active. With vacancies to fill at Hogwarts, Professor Dumbledore persuades Horace Slughorn, back from retirement to become the potions teacher, while Professor Snape receives long awaited news. Harry Potter, together with Dumbledore, must face treacherous tasks to defeat his evil nemesis. Harry finds a book marked mysteriously, "This book is the property of the Half Blood Prince," which helps him excel at Potions class and teaches him a few dark and dangerous ones along the way.

If you're a true Harry Potter fan who has read all the books multiple times, be prepared to be disappointed. It is absolutely a horrible interpretation of the book A lot of scenes were cut to add those that never even happened in the book. They didn't even have the funeral scene which is a must-have. Of course, it is necessary sometimes to cut the movie in order to fit it into a realistic time frame. In doing so, it seems as if they've cut key parts in order to allow for more comedy. So the plot is weak. Thus the movie is funny, absolutely. But laughing the entire time at trite jokes, that's all a true fan can receive.

Anyway, Harry Potter series is considered a successful franchise. And that is mostly due to the main heroes, that are the same. No doubt, those that have not read the book will be impressed. It is a very engrossing film with excellent acting. The young actors have all matured in pace with the maturing content of the books and their acting shows it. Rupert Grint shines brightly in the somewhat Shakespearean love comedy he finds himself in, and makes the most of his new-found sport hero popularity. Emma Watson hits the spot, portraying Hermione's emotional vulnerability with gentle confidence and softness. Daniel Radcliffe also manages to take his character to a new level thus doing a remarkable job. Some may feel that the romantic comedy aspects play too large a role in the movie, but take a closer look, this aspect adds some much-needed lightness and human drama to the movie.

Having some drawbacks in plot, the cinematography, though, is excellent. The lighting is effective, the various focus effects are absolutely magnificent, and the soundtrack, as always, is excellent. The film is a visual pleasure - perhaps lacking in action, but it is one of those films that one could watch several times extracting details from the masterful sets.
