ValkyrieTo watch a historical film is the same as to visit some of the most prominent museums of the world free of chage, besides without spending money on flights between the countries and living in hotels. But in a museum the history is dead and it comes alive in a movie. As to recreate the events of the past we need elaborate and panoramic settings, authentic period costumes and large cast of characters. Such films are really engaging. On-location filming can make you feel a part of the history, isn't it great? The only drawback historicals have is that rewriting history it suffers from inauthenticity. Accuracy is sometimes sacrificed: the chronology is telescoped or modified, and the political/historical forces take a back seat to the personalization and ideological slant of the time. Thus unfortunately we don't have history in a film but the position and the point of view of a director. Nevertheless it is always interesting to know another variant.
